The Hanover Wild (8-4-0, 7-1-0 NHAHA) breezed past the Keene Cobras (0-3-1 NHAHA) 11-1 at Thompson Arena.
The Wild had a great weekend earning all six points up for grabs. More importantly, the Wild played three great hockey games. The effort level was ramped up to the highest level it's been all year, and it showed.
Though the Wild started slow, giving up a goal in the first minutes of the game, the Wild picked it up and took over the game minutes later as Gregor Vogel scored two goals two minutes apart to give the Wild a 2-1 lead. The first goal coming from a great pass from Nathan St. Pierre and the second coming from yet another wrap-around goal. Jake Reznek finished off the scoring for the 1st period after a nice stick lift and a hard wrist shot that beat the Cobra goaltender to extend the lead to 3-1.
Jackson Kapuscinski held strong in the Wild net, making 12 saves on the night. Carter Auch played solid defensively, making many great plays in the neutral zone to push the play back to the offensive zone. Tom Lyons played one of his best games of the year, making smart decisions nearly every time he touched the puck. Will Fichman continued his hot streak as he led the Wild rush on multiple occasions, creating scoring chances and keeping the play in the Cobra end. Quinn Murnaghan had a few more close calls in this game, nearly squeaking a few shots by the Cobra goaltender.
The 2nd period was more of the same for the Wild, Will Brannen firing home his second goal in as many games on a spin in front of the net after a great feed from Vogel. St. Pierre found the back of the net minutes later after he finished a beautiful saucer pass from Vogel on a two-on-one.
Vogel completed his hat-trick with two minutes remaining in the period on a fake wrap-around before stuffing it into the empty half of the net. "I told him last game to try the wrap-around and it worked." Dodds said. "He almost scored three more times with that move, so I told him to fake it and go the other way. He worked the move to perfection." The Wild weren't done yet, Vogel scoring with 7 seconds left on a rebound from St. Pierre who received a pass from Brannen to create the chance.
The 3rd period saw goals from Ben Ives, Jake Reznek, Vogel, and Archer Judd. Ives sniped the goalie high blocker side on a great individual effort. Reznek wanted to show Ives he could snipe too, firing one off the post and in after a great forecheck. Vogel got his 5th goal of the game after a scrum in front of the net with help from Brannen. Judd finished off the scoring for the Wild on a careless giveaway from the Cobra goaltender and fired it into the empty net.
The Wild outshot the Cobras 50-13 in the dominating performance. The Wild look ahead to next Saturday when they face a strong Manchester Flames (4-2-0 NHAHA) team.
