The Hanover Wild (5-3-0, 4-2-0 NHAHA) lost in a great game to the undefeated NE Edge (7-0-0 NHAHA) at Skate 3.
Coach Dodds has stressed the team needs to have stronger starts and that was what killed the Wild again today. The Edge took advantage of the slow start and capitalized in the first minutes of the game to take a 1-0 lead. The Wild shook off the slow start and tied up the game on a goal by Ben Ives, who drove the net after a great pinch by defenseman Will Fichman. The assist lengthened Fichman's point streak to three games.
Gregor Vogel gave the Wild a 2-1 lead after receiving a break out pass from Nathan St. Pierre and using his speed to create the scoring chance. The Wild took the 2-1 lead into the 2nd period where Edge caught the Wild sleeping with 46 seconds left in the 2nd period and tied the game up at two.
Jackson Kapuscinski kept the Wild in the game, making multiple breakaway and backdoor saves. Carter Auch played fantastic defensively, battling for every lose puck and winning those battles cleanly. Jake Reznek proved to be the strongest defensive forward again against the Edge, working hard to backcheck and regain possession and taking hits to make plays offensively.
The Wild put on heavy pressure in the 3rd period, creating multiple great scoring opportunities, but hitting the crossbar, the post, or just missing wide. The Edge took advantage of the lone 3rd period mistake by the Wild to pull ahead 3-2 with three minutes remaining. The Wild created more chances as the game came close to the end, Will Brannen putting one just by the post, but couldn't capitalize, sending the Wild home with a heartbreaking 3-2 loss.
"That was a great hockey game." Dodds said after the game. "Unfortunately our slow start cost us again. This game proved to us that we can play with any team in the state. There isn't a team out there that wants to see the Hanover Wild on their schedule."
The Wild look ahead to a game Wednesday night at Turner Arena against the Cardigan Cougars (0-1-0).
